What an R&B or Soul Band Brings to a Houston Event
R&B and soul are the safest bet on a mixed guest list. Motown and classic soul are the rare catalogue that a grandparent and a twenty-five-year-old will both get up for, which is why these bands are booked as often for a company gala as for a wedding reception.
The acts on this page span the range. CC Rider Band plays classic Motown, soul and R&B. Collector’s Item moves through dance, Motown, funk, R&B, smooth jazz and standards. The Mambo Jazz Kings have been performing since 1983, and The Next Level Band has played everything from jazz to hip hop for event planners for more than twenty years. Avalon Music has been booking live music across the Houston area since 1993.
Choosing the Right Size Band
An R&B lineup is larger than most, because the horn section and backing vocals are the sound. Band size drives both the impact and the budget:
- Four to six pieces. Mid-size receptions and corporate dinners of roughly 75 to 200 guests, with a rhythm section and a lead vocalist carrying the set.
- Seven to nine pieces. The classic soul-revue shape, with horns and multiple vocalists. Brotherhood is a seven-piece contemporary dance band led by two vocalists.
- Ten and up. Ballrooms and galas that need to be filled. Universal Crush is an eleven-piece, Memphis Train Revue a ten-piece, and Hybrid 7 scales between seven and twelve performers depending on the room.
If the reception songs matter more to you than the lineup, our guide to R&B and soul music for wedding receptions is the place to start. For an act that can cover soul alongside country, rock and Top 40 in one night, see variety bands; for something more restrained through dinner, jazz and swing.

Frequently Asked Questions About R&B Bands in Houston
How much does an R&B band cost in Houston?
Cost depends on the number of musicians, how long they play, the date and the travel involved, and R&B lineups tend to be larger than average because of the horn section. Wedding bands in Houston typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 and up, with a four-piece playing a three-hour reception usually starting around $5,000 to $10,000. For corporate events, full bands typically run from $3,500 to $12,000 and up. Quotes are free and come back within 24 to 48 hours. Our Houston live band pricing guide breaks down what moves the number.
How big should an R&B band be for a wedding reception?
It depends on the room and the guest count. A duo or trio suits an intimate setting of 30 to 75 guests, a four to six piece works for a mid-size venue of 75 to 200, and larger ballrooms carry an eight-piece or bigger comfortably. With R&B specifically, the horn section is much of what people are hiring, so the step up from six to eight is more audible here than in most genres.
Can the same band play dinner music and a dance set?
Yes, and most of these bands are built for it. They transition from restrained background music during dinner into a high-energy dance set later in the evening. Where an event needs two distinct sounds, we can also book separate ensembles for different parts of the night rather than asking one band to cover both.
Can we request specific songs?
Yes. Every booking includes a pre-event consultation where you share must-play songs, your first dance selection and music for the key moments of the evening. Bands will learn and rehearse requests given reasonable notice.
How far in advance should we book?
Twelve to twenty-four months for a wedding, particularly for peak season dates in spring and fall and for December, when popular Houston bands book out quickly. Corporate and private events can often be arranged on shorter notice. A deposit of around 50% secures the date, with the balance usually due two to four weeks before the event.
Do the bands bring their own sound equipment?
Yes. The bands are self-contained, with a professional PA, monitors, microphones and standard lighting, and their quotes include setup and teardown. For larger ballrooms we sometimes recommend supplemental sound, and we will say so before you book rather than after.
